Berger M.M.

Mette Berger completed her medical studies at the University of Lausanne and completed her medical specialties and MD in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine at CHUV. She trained as a nutritionist at the University of Nancy, France, and completed her Ph.D. training in trace elements at the University of Umeå (Sweden). Intensive care physician in the Lausanne University Hospital, with an anesthesiology background, specialized in burn care and in clinical nutrition. Recently retired from clinical activities, she continues research on micronutrients and immunity as Prof. Hon. of the University of Lausanne. Research in clinical nutrition and micronutrition, showing the existence of acute micronutrient deficiencies in several critical care conditions, and in the elderly population. Indirect calorimetry-based research enabling the development of the concept of maximal tolerable energy deficit during the ICU stay. The latest randomized trials show that individualized feeding covering measured energy expenditure reduces infectious complications and costs, due to an improved immune response. She belongs to ESPEN’s ICU guideline group, and has directed the upcoming micronutrient guidelines. Past-chair of ESICM’s MEN- metabolism and nutrition working group. Lecturing worldwide in 5 languages about individualized nutrition therapy and micronutrition. Teacher for the LLL-ESPEN training program. Over 260 peer-reviewed publications and 40 book chapters
